Parks and Recreation Planning Through GIS: An Assessment of Mecklenburg County (NC) Park Service Levels Relative to County-wide Growth

John Bondurant

The purpose of this study is to apply a GIS to determine existing park service levels within the County surrounding Charlotte, North Carolina. Using ArcInfo, ArcView GIS, and ArcView Spatial Analyst, local service areas for each park were established. Then each park was examined relative to existing County-wide data such as permit issuances, population projections, and future park sites. An assessment of those parks needing additional acreage to sustain population growth was determined through a series of map overlays done in a desktop environment.
