GIS Implementation Issues and Strategies in K-12 Education

Richard H. Audet
Gail Ludwig

Following a teacher's initial decision to integrate GIS into the curriculum as a spatial learning tool, three important issues immediately arise. Educators must first address several factors that significantly affect the successful implementation of GIS technology. A second consideration is the development of appropriate learning contexts for applying GIS in the classroom. Lastly, effective instructional approaches must be adopted. This paper reviews the findings of an educational research project supported by the National Science Foundation that explored each of the above issues. A second project that examined the applications of GIS in teacher preparation programs will be discussed.
