Challenges of Large-Scale Environmental Mapping in Faraway Places
Lisa WynnDeveloping large-scale environmental maps in remote areas of the world presents special challenges. Knight Piesold is faced with these challenges continually, as its environmental studies are carried out in such locales as Tajikistan, the Andes, and Mali. Knight Piesold has adopted standard practices for data collection for such projects including specifications for photogrammetric basemap data, scanning of basemaps, field mapping of thematic data, and sample data collection using GPS. Data conversion and mapping involve integration of different file types, coordinate systems, and scales. We will share our experiences in these types of projects and provide recommendations.
