RiskMAP: GIS Applications for Environmental and Crisis Management

Emily Goodenough
Mark Abkowitz

Increasing interest in risk management planning and incident management has led industry executives and public officials to seek creative solutions in environmental and crisis management practice. Geographic information systems are considered a fundamental technology for developing application solutions to support these needs, due to the spatial nature of the problems encountered and the ability to visualize impacts and available resources. In response to these considerations, RiskMAP has been created as a GIS application solutions environment. Developed under MapObjects, RiskMAP consists of an integrated system of databases, maps, analysis modules, and management reports. The software can be used to identify high-risk operations, perform risk assessments, evaluate risk reduction alternatives, support emergency response planning, or assist with incident management. The data layers can also be accessed separately for use in ArcView GIS applications. The presentation will identify GIS application needs in environmental and crisis management, describe design considerations that have gone into RiskMAP, and illustrate its application in meeting regulatory requirements and industry protocols.
