Teaching ArcView GIS Using the Web Paper Text

Dr. Uzair Shamsi

This paper will show how an ArcView GIS course can be taught using the World Wide Web. The approach will be demonstrated with the experience gained through a GIS course, GIS Applications for Civil and Environmental Engineers (CEE 2602), taught by the author in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A Web site was created for the course (www.pitt.edu/~ushamsi/cee2602.html) for interacting with the students. It was found that despite the voluntary Web participation, students' usage of the Web site was quite significant. Most students used the site to download homework and submit the solutions on their own home pages.
