Reducing Infant Mortality in the District of Columbia Using GIS Paper Text

Joy Phillips

This study utilizes GIS methodology in finding a solution to high infant mortality in the District of Columbia. The targeted population for reduction of mortality is identified geographically by areas of highest incidence with respect to mortality rates, socioeconomic status, and health care access. Using linked birth and death files from 1981-1995, a socioeconomic database, and a health facility database, ArcView GIS identifies areas of high incidence and examines the relationship among features. The results are used to (1) determine infant mortality risk associated with a confluence of certain factors in specific areas and (2) evaluate a Healthy Start Program catchment area.
