Within Europe there are an estimated 450 million olive trees. Under European Economic Community regulations, each country in Europe must maintain a register of these trees. The Joint Research Centre of the European Commission has developed a methodology and software for automatic identification of olive trees from scanned aerial photography. This is integrated with ArcView GIS to provide a potential solution to the problem of identifying so many trees in a short time frame. The results of this work are distributed freely to all interested parties.
