Volusian Water Alliance Water Supply Plan Development
Julie A. RedikerThe Volusian Water Alliance selected PBS&J to develop a water supply plan for Volusia County and surrounding areas. Impacts of continued pumpage of the Floridian aquifer at the projected rates include reduced spring discharges, encroachment of brackish water into freshwater supplies, and vegetation impacts on the wetlands. Strategies being developed on a large regional basis include alternatives such as aquifer recharge, aquifer storage and recovery, use of brackish groundwater, use of surface water, use of reclaimed water, water conservation, mitigation and avoidance, and optimization/relocation of withdrawals from the Floridian aquifer. GIS will be used to identify and evaluate potential water supply options and develop a plan to extend the uses for existing recharge areas.
