GIS and Marketing in the Public Library Environment

Koontz, Christie

Research indicates public libraries serving minorities or low-income individuals are used differently. In this nationwide study funded by the U.S. Department of Education, field data are being collected using personal digital assistants. GIS software and training is provided at nine sites to library staff. The goal is to permit library staff to conduct their own market analysis in evaluating the information needs of their users as well as in better identifying the market area being served by the library. This research will develop a national baseline for better library performance measures in minority and low-income library market areas.
