Historical Map Recovery Using Multiple, Integrated Esri Programs Paper Text

Robert H. Huxford

Washington State and NOAA, in a coastal mapping partnership, have joined forces to develop methods to vectorize shorelines from rasterized historic and contemporary NOS topographic survey sheets. The methods developed integrate ArcInfo, ArcScan, ArcTools, ArcView GIS, ArcView Spatial Analyst, and customized AMLs into a seamless methodology that simplifies and speeds up the vectorization process. Shorelines as far back as 1850 have been recovered and now can be compared with present data to identify changes in the Washington coast.
