Enterprise Wide Deployment of GIS Using the Internet

Ravi Narasimhan

Over the past decade, corporations like electric and gas utilities have invested a great deal of time, effort, and money in building GIS databases. The problem facing these organizations now is to disseminate this information, which has been maintained in GIS/IT departments, throughout the enterprise. Traditional approaches for deploying GIS do not scale well when an enterprisewide deployment is contemplated. The problems range from the cost of the software and hardware to the network infrastructure, and so forth. The Internet and the corporate Intranet hold the promise of providing a framework to facilitate the dissemination of all kinds of information in a cost-effective manner. This paper explores the various alternatives available for deploying GIS capabilities within an organization.
