Open Space Planning Using GIS Techniques

Yabin Su

The Soronan area, which is considered an environmentally preserved area, is located in north Phoenix. Conservation planning for this area became a big issue to the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Library, City of Phoenix, due to the rapid development around this area. To have a better understanding of the current landscape and development of the study area, three-dimensional animation using ArcInfo Version 7.1.1 modules such as ARC TIN, ARC GRID, and ArcTools was conducted for planners and decision makers. A development suitability model was developed using ArcView GIS Version 3.0. Some input parameters used in the model, such as slope, aspect, and drainage network, were derived from digital elevation data using the ArcView Spatial Analyst extension.
