Robust Application Development in ArcView GISKevin HowardRobert Hallett As GIS becomes a more mainstream activity, applications now require greater flexibility and functionality while maintaining simple-to-use graphical user interfaces. This paper explores the challenges involved in developing large, sophisticated ArcView GIS applications that are designed to work on a variety of platforms with various data sets and user requirements. It will address - Reducing development time - Writing robust Avenue code - Application portability across hardware platforms - Accessing user-defined data sets without requiring recoding - Eliminating hard-coded directory paths Case studies used to demonstrate these principles will include applications developed for Southern California Association of Governments and Newton (MA) Public Schools.
