Front-end Tools for Accessing a GIS Data Warehouse

Arnold Waters

The purpose of a data warehouse is to deliver information to end users (Immon). This paper will consider how to provide an end user with a view of information - data in a business context - stored in a data warehouse and/or departmental data mart. The methodology used is dependent on a database of structural and descriptive metadata. The specific tool is an ArcView GIS interface that references an object database of metadata extracted from an Oracle metadata database. The ArcView GIS interface provides a natural language menu of the data categories and sources, standard relates to tabular data, and standard views commonly used by a department. The menu system is complemented by HTML metadata summaries organized by department, category, and name.
