Developing a GIS-Based Land Use Decision Support Tool for Development Review and Subarea PlanningHuiliang LiuBob Watkins One of the major tasks in development review and land use planning is to ensure compatibility and conformity with surrounding areas and areawide plans. Currently, planners usually have to retrieve and review paper maps and documents. This process is often time consuming and limited in scope. The City of Aurora, Colorado, is developing a GIS-based land use decision support tool to facilitate development review and planning for subareas. This tool will have the functions of data gathering, display, analysis, evaluation, and optimization. The key components of the land use decision support tool include - Background Data Component - Knowledge Component - criteria, restrictions, and recommendations from codes and plans - Analysis and Evaluation Component - analysis using the background data component and knowledge component - Recommendation and Optimization - recommendations for appropriate land use development scenarios based on the analysis and evaluation - Report and Display Component - report and display of background information, evaluation criteria, and analysis results
