Small Farms, Big Problems: GIS and Remote Sensing Applications to Limited Resource Farming Operations

Small farms have limited resources available to them such as technology associated with precision farming. To assist limited resource farmers (LRFs) in our area, we are developing a GIS that will combine physical aspects of the farm (soil type, pH, etc.) with remotely sensed data to assess crop health. Previsual crop stress is detected using radio-controlled aircraft and near-infrared narrow-band sensors. These data can give vital warning of incipient crop damage. Combined in a GIS, the LRF will have a management tool that can potentially lower operational costs and reduce environmental impacts.
