Solving the Enrollment Problem with GIS

Thomas Zajkowski

College and university admissions planning officials face many problems including declining enrollment and budgets. They must try to admit as many students as possible while maintaining the quality and diversity of the population. As was proposed by Duane Marble and Jim Herries, GIS and spatial analysis could be use to replace the labor-intensive methods in use today. Using GIS and modern spatial analysis, they first identify applicants who will most likely become graduates of the institution. After that, these tools improve the admission process. GIS can also be used to decide if satellite campuses will alter the decision of students.
