Using GIS for Crime Analysis and MappingXin LuDave Lawless The City of Aurora has developed a GIS-based crime analysis program to assist the police department in studying crime patterns and trends. Crime analysts use pulldown menus to query crime data records by criminal codes, any combination of geographic locators and calendar days, days of week, and time of day. The resultant displays, maps, and tables are used for a variety of analytic functions, more effective police resource deployment, and public meeting display. The system has been deployed to ten sites throughout Aurora's Police Department including research/development, detective bureau, special operations, and police substations.
