Mineral Exploration Tools in ArcView GIS

Daniel Elroi

Until recently the relatively small portion of the mineral exploration industry that used GIS did not use Esri products. Now Knight Pi,sold is applying ArcView GIS to the growing GIS needs of the exploration professional. Data management tools, which are standard in other markets, are being applied to exploration data. Preliminary analysis of data, including data selection and contouring, are being accomplished with the aid of the ArcView Spatial Analyst extension. Borehole cross-sections are being generated dynamically using standard ArcView GIS. Surfaces and three-dimensional borehole data are being created and displayed in the 3D Analyst extension. And links to mine planning software are being created with a variety of ArcView GIS tools. Examples will be given of all these applications and discussion made of their perceived future.
