Remote Detection and Dating of Historic Property Lines in Southeastern Connecticut

James A. Crocker

From 1650 to 1830 land grants in New London, Connecticut, were laid out in rectangular parcels with magnetic pole orientation. ArcView GIS employed a database of historic values of local magnetic declination to identify and date property lines defined by features such as stone walls, without the use of land record data. Results were checked with records of grants to measure the accuracy of the system and to fine-tune the declination database.
