Defining Issue: Managing more than forty-five military installations, a multitude of land uses, facilities, and over 50,000 military personnel requires an intensive and complex infrastructure and management support system. GIS Solution: The four U.S. military services on the island of Okinawa, Japan, have combined resources and coordinated efforts toward the implementation of an enterprise GIS. Anthology: The four U.S. military services on Okinawa, Japan, collaborated and established a Joint Services CADD/GIS Center. This center is dedicated to the implementation and sustainment of geographic information systems that serve not just one organization or installation but rather a very large group of multiservice military installations. Purpose: To emphasize the cooperative and productive implementation efforts of the four branches of the military service located on the Japanese Prefectural island of Okinawa toward a massive enterprise GIS. This is the first Joint Services enterprise GIS effort of its kind and will pave the way for future joint efforts.
