Operational GIS Applications at the French Oceanographic Research Institute, IFREMER

This paper introduces IFREMER, the French oceanographic research institute, and describes various GIS projects led by this institute. Two operational applications using Esri software are detailed: the management of environmental factors and bivalve aquaculture on the pilot site of Marennes-Ol,ron on the Atlantic coast of France, and the FishView program used for the evaluation of fisheries resources onboard the oceanographic vessel Thalassa. Based on the experience of these projects, specialized IFREMER teams can now provide technical, methodological, and thematic support to current and future projects: GIS applications in IFREMER coastal centers, oceanographic GIS data library, deep sea exploration campaigns, and offline processing.
