Utilizing GIS for Registration of the Solid Waste Management System in the Prefecture of Thessaloniki in GreeceAngeliki SalonikidouProf. Nicolas Moussiopoulos An efficient environmental policy, especially in solid waste management, needs integrated databases. This paper presents the status in the field of solid waste management in the Prefecture of Thessaloniki in Greece. The registered area is situated in the center of northern Greece, has a population of one million, and covers a surface of 3,682 square meters. The data are classified in many categories such as composition and generation rates of waste, solid waste facilities, landfill sites, routing collection systems, and containers density. Each of these categories provides the decision maker with many useful data for the design of an environmental policy in solid waste management (i.e., recycling programs, new landfill sites, location of new containers).
