Maputo Development Corridor in Mpumalanga Province of South Africa - GIS: A Decision Tool for a Strategic Environmental Management Plan
Jillian MullerThe Maputo Development Corridor is the construction of a toll road between Maputo (Mozambique) and Witbank (South Africa). The completion date for the road is the year 2000. The corridor passes through the Mpumalanga Province in South Africa. To maximize development opportunities a planning process has been initiated. A Strategic Environmental Management Plan (SEMP) is being developed that incorporates strategic environmental assessment concepts. The aim is to provide a proactive, ongoing interactive approach to development with a focus on environmental and socioeconomic factors. GIS forms an integral part of the SEMP through (1) the development of a database with current information and (2) spatial analysis to determine resource and economic opportunities and constraints.
