GIS-Based Permit Routing: Migration from Traditional Methods to Automation

Tad Franson
Bobby Harris

A GIS-based permit routing application is being developed for the Florida Department of Transportation to assist in the processing of over 80,000 vehicle trip permits per year. The application is designed to provide a route from origin to destination along the routing network while considering road and bridge characteristics. This paper presents a case study of the integration of existing business data within GIS to perform automated permit routing. Recommendations and conclusions are provided as a migration strategy for transportation departments to move from traditional permit routing methods to an automated GIS-based approach.
