Finding a Job in the GIS Industry with Only a Geography Degree Paper Text

Shea Vandeventer

Recent graduates from major universities and newcomers to GIS may find that they are sorely unprepared for what the GIS industry is really like, and they are not alone. Geography students across the nation are being promised that GIS has created high demand for trained GIS users and bright futures for geographers. The demand may be there, but well qualified GIS users are not. Universities must begin to work better with students to teach them how to succeed in GIS outside of academia. Students need better training in GIS, programming skills, and real-world experience through internships.
