Automated Tracking and Updating System for GIS Data Set MaintenanceGerald M. BoydFrank Somarriba , Chrissie Deibel Defining Issue: How you get a handle on the backlog of projects that aren't in your GIS data set, with the scarce resources of budget, people, and time that all cities face. GIS Solution: The City of Spokane, Washington, with the support of Merrick & Company and Esri, tackled this task of GIS data set maintenance by developing an application that automates the tracking and updating process. Methodology: TRACKER consists of two custom applications that work in concert to input, track, and manage projects for required data maintenance updates to ArcInfo basemap coverages. Software: The tracking application was created with ArcView GIS as the geographic component and MS Access as the relational database component. ArcInfo AMLs were written to automate the GIS data set updates. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to address the issue of GIS data set maintenance. The methodology and procedures required for that maintenance along with the management of the updates will be addressed through the review of one city's approach to tracking the updating process.
