Spatial Analysis of Crimes Using ArcView GIS

Yue-Hong Chou

ArcView GIS provides effective and user-friendly tools for a variety of spatial analyses. The analytical capability of ArcView GIS is especially useful for law enforcement agencies to detect spatial patterns in the distribution of crimes in urban areas. The identified spatial pattern can be related to socioeconomic and demographic characteristics in order for cost-effective measures of crime prevention to be planned. An ArcView GIS-based application developed specifically for public safety provides built-in functions for management of crime database, preparation of periodical crime-related reports, and manipulation of crime data for both statistical and spatial analyses.
