A GIS Approach Toward Development of a Warehouse Location Model
Surya SahooFederal Express's new distance-based pricing initiative demands that LEC&C (Logistic, Electronic Commerce and Catalog) utilize a modeling tool that optimizes the best location for a distribution facility. This paper focuses on an ongoing project GIS-based warehouse location model, which determines the optimum number and locations of distribution centers so that the customers within a defined AOI can be serviced efficiently and economically. This project will encompass creation of a GIS application using Visual Basic and MapObjects, system interfaces, and database conversion. The proposed system will provide user interface to edit model parameters and formulate and analyze "what if" scenarios. The system will also provide the ability to query the database and produce maps and reports.
