Use of a Geographic Information System To Assist in Evaluating Water Quality of Navigable Waters in GeorgiaDiane C. BurgoonKeith W. McFadden As mandated by the Clean Water Act, the State of Georgia is required to prepare biennial reports that describe the current quality of water of the navigable waters of the State. To make the water quality data more accessible and useful than in the previously published table format, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources has produced a map product and accompanying relational database. Using geographic information system methods and techniques, the State attribution data were joined to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency River Reach Files. These data, combined with the USGS Digital Raster Graphic files, compose the final map product and database.
