Analyzing Rural Settlement Patterns of Nebraska (1880-1950) Using GIS

Robert J. Hall

The most dynamic period of rural settlement in Nebraska was between 1880 and 1950. During this period, settlements were created, grew, and then went through various patterns of increase, decrease, and stabilization. A few have ceased to exist. Using ArcView GIS along with its extensions, it is possible to create models that help explain the dynamic geographical processes and patterns of rural settlement in this Great Plains state.
