A GIS/GPS Application for Modeling Thorium Concentrations Along a Waterway

Frank Schultz

In 1997, Kerr McGee Corp. initiated a characterization study to identify thorium concentrations along a five-mile creek/river system. Surface gamma measurements were acquired using GPS units linked to gamma counters. All surface results were analyzed using ArcView GIS. This included monitoring daily progress and calculating thorium cutoff limits to reflect land status types, residential buildings and floodplain and floodway boundaries. The cutoff boundaries were then uploaded to the GPS unit for establishing locations for the subsurface drilling program. The downhole data were analyzed using ArcView Spatial Analyst. The paper will describe the work flow and the benefits of using GIS.
