ArcView GIS and custom extensions are enabling South Carolina's Addressing and Geocoding Project to update TIGER/Line information and street geography for every city and county in the State. TIGER/Line updates are returned digitally to the Census Bureau. The more than three- year project is creating the data infrastructure and mechanisms for maintaining a State-wide address geocoding basemap accurate to the street segment (noncentroid). Challenges such as the complexity of TIGER/Line street enhancement, minimizing staff training requirements, and minimizing hardware and software costs required extensive application development within ArcView GIS and Avenue. Data from this project proved invaluable during dress rehearsal activities for Census 2000.
