GIS is used extensively to integrate effective natural resources management and Army training at USMA. GIS in combination with GPS and radio tracking technologies has been employed to help identify and set aside areas for the protection of the eastern timber rattlesnake, a New York State threatened species. GIS is also being used to monitor and evaluate changes in habitat quality and flora and fauna species distribution associated with Army training activity. The spatial and temporal capabilities of the GIS aid in the management of natural resources to ensure long-term land sustainability for effective and continuous Army training.
