Hydrographic Charts: Integrate SDE Database Building with High-Quality Mapping
Andreas OxenstiernaFor clients in the hydrographic world, a hydrographic information system (HIS) provides a modern client/server structure to build and maintain hydrographic data into SDE Version 3.0. The HIS Object Catalog describes and manages properties of the eighty object classes such as allowed geometric types, attributes, relations, edit properties, and symbology. The main features of HIS include an integrated process control, robust integrity checks, and relevant tools to load and edit data into the system using object-oriented techniques. To produce high-quality cartographic and other products from the HIS database, an integration with the existing application Cartographic Production System (CPS) will be developed. CPS is a mature application whose main features includes database-driven high-quality map production, map series, real WYSIWYG editing, and a rich set of advanced cartographic tools. As HIS is an application of ArcView GIS Version 3.0 and CPS is an application of ArcInfo Version 7.x, the integration will include controlled write access to the main SDE database, with long-term transactions and history management; support of the object catalog in HIS to ensure database consistency to all products; handling of metadata objects; process control; product management; and a common GUI interface.
