Building a GIS Application for the WWW

John Ganter
John Alexander

There are three requirements for connecting applications to the Web: (1) building applications as servers that understand URL-encoded transactions, (2) connecting applications to a Web server and making the transactions URL-addressable, and (3) producing dynamic Web documents (graphics [gif and JPEG] and HTML markup). This paper reviews four examples of GIS applications for the WWW and discusses how each one meets these three requirements. The four examples are (1) Esri's MapCafe (ArcView IMS), (2) Esri's ActiveX MapObjects View (MapObjects IMS), (3) Sgs, a hybrid developed with MapObjects and Active Server Pages (ASP), and (4) wptc's MetaView Sources for templates and toolkits assisting with the development of a Web-based GIS application will be included in the discussion.
