The ambition of the spring 1997 regional planning studio at the University of Pennsylvania was the development and demonstration of a set of flexible, adaptable media tools that would facilitate a spatial decision making process for Philadelphia's Fairmount Park. While we recognized the agency of the synoptic maps and coverages used by a conventional GIS and applied to a decision making process, the integration of a diversity of media will only serve to enrich and enhance the potential of planning support systems. The studio was particularly interested in issues of community and education. This paper will discuss GIS in terms of its potential to frame dialogs that create and nurture communities, both physical and virtual.
