A GIS Application Supporting Cable Laydowns

Bob Brundage
Steve Lingsch

A GIS application was developed for integrating environmental, oceanographic, geophysical, and human activity (e.g., fishing) data for site assessment planning for offshore cable laydowns in littoral regions (e.g., <1,000 meter depths). The core of the system is ArcInfo, with links to Legacy, and X11/Motif applications. Data types included are seafloor characteristics (e.g., bathymetry, roughness, and slope), acoustic imagery, sound speed profiles, currents, surface and subsurface composition, seismic, and fishing activity. Analytic tools include thresholding on multiple parameters for optimal site selection, distance over terrain calculation, calculation of engineering parameters, report generation, 3D visualization (fly-through over the cable), and the draping of acoustic imagery over the terrain.
