In June of 1996, the Hamilton County Environmental Priorities Project (HCEPP) began as a two-year community-based effort. Based in Cincinnati, Ohio, its purpose is to collaboratively set a course toward identifying and effectively addressing impacts that will measurably improve the County's environment in two phases: impact identification and assessment and action plan development. In order to bring more clarity to the complexity of environmental issues, GIS was introduced and depended on as an important tool used for organizing and sharing information with participants and the public. With the assistance of the Cincinnati Area Geographic Information System (CAGIS) consortium and the Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati, many products and services were delivered and included - Compilation of new geographic data related to geography - Extensive theme maps forming an environmental impact atlas - Development of a GIS repository for HCEPP - Exploring the use of the Internet as a means to extend communication GIS provided the single best means of depicting the multitude and relationship of impacts and the most effective means of communicating them between and among the working groups and the general public.
