The Role of GIS in Community Policing

Paul Smith
Kara Elmquist

GIS can play an important role in community policing. Officers use it both as an aid in the analysis of crime patterns and to examine sources of social disorder. This paper outlines the GIS component of a new Regional Community Policing Training Institute established by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg (NC) Police Department and UNC-Charlotte. Training is offered at many levels: basic concepts of GIS, using GIS as a problem solving tool, crime analysis techniques (such as radial, hot spot, and grid analysis), and a manager's overview of GIS.
