Metro Area Disaster Geographic Information System (MAD GIS) is a software application for natural hazard risk assessment and emergency management. Metro with the assistance of GeoNorth, Inc. has constructed a MapObjects-Visual Basic interface to combine Metro's GIS database with natural hazard data for rapid assessment of potential natural disaster risks. Through a FEMA grant, Metro and a consortium of government agencies have assessed earthquake hazard and the risks posed by potential earthquakes. MAD GIS incorporates earthquake and flood hazard data with built environment data to assess the region's vulnerability. This paper explains how the application delivers powerful spatial analysis in an easy-to-use desktop environment.
