Developing the Master Plan for the Redwoods

Ruskin Hartley

Save-the-Redwoods League was founded in 1918 to rescue the redwoods from logging and development by purchasing land at fair market value. Throughout its history, the League has based its purchases and recommended management practices on scientific understanding of the redwoods. The League is currently developing a master plan for the redwoods, which will assemble the best available information on the redwoods and share it broadly with all stakeholders. A key component is the development of a geographic information system to compile and analyze these data and to be used as a cooperative land management tool. This paper will examine the League's development of the master plan and the GIS.
