Use of Work Flow Modeling To Maximize GIS Benefits

David Kussie

When deployed effectively, GIS technology is a powerful tool that enables an organization to improve operational efficiency and conserve resources. However, to leverage GIS technology successfully it is critical to understand an organization's business operations. Work flow modeling is an effective technique for understanding and documenting existing business processes. Moreover, it provides a tool for identifying and communicating potential business practice improvements through application of GIS technology. In addition, work flow modeling helps focus design and deployment of GIS applications. This paper presents a work flow modeling method and describes how the method is used to support the City of Indianapolis's enterprise GIS.
