Conservation Planning Priorities in the Southern Rocky Mountains

Bill Martin
Rosalind McClellan , Marianne Moulton

The Southern Rockies Ecosystem Project (SREP) has developed a regional conservation plan for the Rocky Mountains of Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico. Rapid growth and change within the region are threatening the long-term capability of the landscape to support whole ecosystems, natural processes, and viable habitat for wide ranging and sensitive species. This paper addresses (1) what steps SREP has taken to map the region's resources using a GIS, (2) how the use of a GIS has improved SREP's effectiveness at communicating threats and priorities for conservation, and (3) how SREP's proactive approach has led to the development of a comprehensive conservation plan to provide for the long-term sustainability of the ecosystem.
