The experience of infusing geographic information systems into an academic institution parallels the experience of public agencies and private organizations. Common factors support GIS implementation. Arizona State University's 1991-1997 experience shows the importance of top managerial support, adequate funding, targeted opportunities, and a trained user group. Two related applications now exist for university administration: a community outreach information page for the Office of the President and a space planning study for the Office of Academic Facilities. Both applications rely on the diffusion of GIS via the Internet. This experience offers lessons for other educational institutions seeking to manage scarce resources.
