Automating Color Selection for Adjoining Polygons in ArcView GIS

Eric Fowler
Jack Riley

Users spend a lot of time and energy getting maps to look presentable. Much of this time is selecting color and ensuring adjoining polygons don't share the same color. Our presentation will demonstrate the application of the four-color map problem using Avenue. Additional insight into the efficiency of the application will be brought up for audience feedback. The various approaches to applying the theorem, history, and process leading to the application will be covered. This paper not only provides an application of the four-color map problem, but also looks at its effect on cartography in recent history.
