Hoh River Floodplain Inventory: Integrating GIS and GPS To Redefine Floodplain Management

Kim Taylor
Jill Silver

The Hoh River is located along the northwestern coast of Washington State and is the central focus for the Hoh Indian tribe's culture and subsistence. A meandering, glacial river, the Hoh has an extensive floodplain that provides diverse habitats for five salmon and trout species. However, logging and other land uses have degraded fish habitat, a problem exacerbated by poor documentation of floodplain habitats on State resource maps. This project used GPS and GIS technology to document floodplain habitats along the Hoh River. The data will be used to update State maps, identify degraded areas, and develop restoration strategies.
