The mission of the Naval Ice Center (NAVICECEN) is to provide global sea ice analysis, forecast, outlooks, and ship routing recommendations within the marginal sea ice zone of all Arctic and Antarctic seas. Beginning in 1997, NAVICECEN has transitioned to utilize GIS technology in the development of a highly detailed ice climatology database. NAVICECEN has adopted ArcView GIS, ArcView Spatial Analyst, and ArcInfo software as its GIS to use in the development of its ice products. An Ice Analyst extension has been developed under ArcView GIS that provides the analyst with the tools necessary to accurately and efficiently perform the tasks to generate ice analysis and forecast. This paper will describe the development of this extension and the various analysis techniques that were developed primarily with ArcView GIS and ArcView Spatial Analyst for product generation.
