Managing Chaos: Maintaining a Multiple Format Geographic Database

Rudy Prosser

The Hanford Site is the original plutonium production facility built during World War II and is now the largest Superfund cleanup site in the world. The Department of Energy, its contractors and regulators, native American tribes, and interested parties require spatial data to plan, manage, and monitor the cleanup. To provide this support, the Hanford Geographic Information System (HGIS) makes data available in multiple formats (coverages, shapefiles, EXPORT files, and DXF files). HGIS must keep these multiple formats current and synchronized so the same data are available regardless of format. This paper describes the procedures and tools used by HGIS in managing and maintaining its databases.
