Three-dimensional visualization, navigation, and analysis offer a visually powerful and potentially beneficial aid to the spatial understanding of geographic information by students. Simultaneously, these new functional opportunities may yet prove to be overly complex for effective user comprehension. This paper will feature TERC's findings from the Visualizing Earth project. We will report on the cognitive issues surrounding student understanding of two-dimensional to three-dimensional transformations, with particular emphasis on the use of the ArcView Spatial Analyst and ArcView 3D Analyst extensions in support of this research.
